Experiencing the UVa Community

Being part of the UVa community means experiencing a variety of artistic, cultural, athletic, and outdoor activities year-round. Theatergoers attend on-Grounds productions by the Virginia Players and Heritage Theatre Festival or performances by the Four County Players and the Light Opera Society. The University of Virginia Art Museum presents special exhibitions and maintains a permanent collection of more than 10,000 objects, including art from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The Kluge‐Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia is one of the largest and finest private collections of Australian Aboriginal art in the world. UVa also sponsors an evening concert series as well as concerts by local bands and symphony orchestras.

The John Paul Jones Arena is home to the men’s and women’s UVa Cavalier basketball teams. With nearly 15,000 seats, the arena also hosts myriad attractions, including concerts, family shows, and community events. University offers a number of indoor and outdoor fitness facilities, including the 54,300-square-foot Aquatic & Fitness Center, outdoor tracks for jogging, and fields for intramural sports and individual recreation. As a Faculty and Staff member at the University we are pleased is pleased to offer discounts to selected shows and events at the Arena and offer reduced membership to University fitness centers.

The University community includes approximately 2,100 faculty and 10,000 staff members in the University proper and the UVA Health System. There are some 21,000 students—13,700 undergraduates and 6,600 graduate and professional students.

While national surveys are notable achievements, the University’s success can best be measured by the superior quality of the students who attend. They are diverse, smart, and engaged, the equal of students anywhere in the nation. UVa students bring with them a sense of creativity, engagement, and vitality that manifests itself inside and outside the classroom. Their interests and their activities, more than any other factors, make the University an exciting place to be.
