The UVA HR Talent Community Ready To Assist

If Thomas Jefferson visited the University of Virginia today, he might not recognize his “academical village” which, over the past 200 years, has evolved to include:

  • A Level I trauma center and teaching hospital
  • A tier-one research institution
  • The nation’s number three public university

UVA comprises a community of approximately 30,000 students, staff, faculty, health professionals, and temporary employees across the Academic Division’s twelve schools and supporting infrastructure, the hospital and cancer center, the clinical practices of the University Physicians Group, and the College at Wise in Southwest Virginia.

The University’s ninth president James E. Ryan took office in August 2018 and launched the Ours to Shape campaign in the fall of 2018, inviting the University and its extended community to help create a roadmap for UVA’s next century and beyond. The campaign is organized around three questions:

  • How can we strengthen our community?
  • How can we support discoveries?
  • How can we better serve the Commonwealth – and the world?

The key to achieving UVA’s future vision lies in exceptional talent — those faculty, staff, and team members here today and those we will need to bring here in the future. Whether engaging with companies, communities, localities, non-profits, or education partners, UVA HR’s Talent Organization helps attract, hire, develop, and retain skilled people who contribute to our most compelling projects and initiatives, maintain superior facilities and operations, and are committed to service to our community, the Commonwealth, and the world.

In August, the Board of Visitors approved an investment of $100 million in strategic funds for student scholarships. Between new gifts and matching funds, the initial Scholars Fund investment resulted in $212 million for endowments that will support more than 140 student scholarships annually – a collaborative effort of many employees to build a diverse, vibrant student body, and, ultimately, a stronger workforce for our country.

Our Health System’s robust Telemedicine Program has benefitted citizens and medical professionals worldwide – from Culpepper, Virginia to Tanzania – for more than 20 years. Karen Rheuban, Director for the Center for Telehealth, leads a team who provides services to patients in more than 60 different subspecialties of healthcare.

We are also looking forward to the University’s new Biocomplexity Initiative that seeks to employ the principles of interdisciplinary team science to integrate such diverse disciplines as molecular science and public policy analysis in order to solve complex and multidimensional problems in medicine and society. Chris Barrett will lead the project in collaboration with researchers across the Commonwealth, as well as teams in the Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Institute – a joint venture of UVA, Inova Health System, and George Mason University.

In his inaugural address, President Ryan envisioned “… a community that is as vibrant as it is diverse… bound by shared values of student self-governance and responsibility, honor and integrity, openness and civility, intellectual rigor and human compassion, and … willing to build bridges across apparent lines of difference. A community that is not simply inclusive and equitable, but also genuinely integrated.” With this in mind, the UVA HR’s Talent organization ultimate goal is to support and develop our diverse community.

Whatever the project or initiative, the HR Talent Division offers recruitment solutions that include sourcing and posting jobs, providing a robust candidate experience, and managing recruitment vendors. We consult with hiring managers to increase the diversity of candidate pools and to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, policies and standards. Through standardized hiring tools, we help hiring managers and search committees. Our dual career services team helps faculty and staff spouses and partners obtain employment. We also offer existing services, like UVA Temps, as well as new services, such as building workforce pipelines for seasonal or hard-to-fill positions.

From prospective candidates and new hires, to managers, to temporary employees, we bring teams together to ensure our faculty, staff and team members continue to build nationally ranked schools and programs, care for patients at a major academic medical center, and propel new discovery and creation within a renowned research University.

We value feedback and new ideas, so reach out to our HR Solution Center today and let us know how we can continue to improve, as well as offer you outstanding services.
