Retirement is an exciting time. As your transition nears, it's important to have a plan in place to ensure you're prepared. UVA has many resources to support retirement. When ready, reach out to our Benefits Counselors, they are glad to discuss your options.

Retirement

Depending on your employment status, you have the option to enroll in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS), Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), or Medical Center Retirement Program (MCRP). Through these programs, you also get benefits like life insurance, disability coverage, long-term care benefits, and survivor benefits.

How to Enroll

Plan well in advance. Contact the UVA HR Solution Center, Medicare, and Social Security Administration office using the timeline below for assistance and enrollment forms. If you do not enroll within 31 days of retirement, you and your dependents) may not enroll in the future.

COBRA

Under a federal law called the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), you and your eligible covered dependents may continue your group health benefits when your coverage is lost due to a qualifying event.
