UPG Open Enrollment Information

2020 UPG Open Enrollment

This page contains Open Enrollment information for the plan year July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021.

Critical to Know:

  • You must complete your choices for Open Enrollment between May 25 - June 5, 2020 in Workday. For Workday-related assistance, please see the Open Enrollment job aid.
  • Open Enrollment closes at 5:00 pm on June 5.
  • For the plan year July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021, there are no plan changes or rate changes.
  • If you do not wish to make any changes and do not complete the Workday event, your current insurance plans will continue as they are currently.
  • FSA accounts MUST be re-elected each year by completing your Workday open enrollment event.
  • Special Note: Employees on partial schedule reduction or furlough remain eligible for benefits and can make elections during Open Enrollment. As a reminder, the start and end of either a partial schedule reduction or furlough is considered a qualifying life event. Your benefits team is available to you to discuss your options and assist in navigating these events.

Open Enrollment determines your elections for the upcoming plan year of July 1, 2020-June 30, 2021.

This is your annual opportunity to add or drop a plan and make changes to your covered dependents without having a qualifying event. For dental, you can also change your coverage level at this time. For those employees with life insurance through Principal, Open Enrollment provides an opportunity to increase your coverage without needing to submit Evidence of Insurability.

Elections take effect July 1, 2020. The plan year deductions will first be reflected on your July 17th paycheck. After Open Enrollment, you will only be able to make changes if you experience a qualifying life event.

Please review the sections below regarding insurance, flexible spending accounts, and life insurance options.

  • Health Insurance

UPG offers Health insurance through Anthem.

Virginia residents who elect coverage will be enrolled in the Anthem Healthkeepers plan. This is an open access point of service plan and no referral is needed for specialist visits. The network is a Virginia-based network of providers.

Employees living outside the Commonwealth of Virginia who elect coverage will be enrolled in the Anthem KeyCare plan.

The assigned plan is based on residence and an employee cannot elect between the two. Premiums for the two plans are the same.

Both plans include a vision benefit of one routine eye exam per plan year per member.

The cost of health insurance premiums is shared between UPG and the Employee.

  • Dental Insurance

Dental coverage is available for UPG employees through United Concordia Dental, in the Elite Plus network. There are two plan options from which to select based on the level of dental coverage you and your family need. View details in the document below comparing the High Plan and the Base Plan.

    Dental insurance is employee-paid.

  • Flexible Spending Account

If you wish to contribute to you Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you must elect the amount in Workday each year during Open Enrollment.

UPG employees have the opportunity to enroll in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for health care out-of-pocket expenses and/or for dependent daycare expenses.

    • Medical FSA Annual Contribution Limit: $2,700
    • Dependent Care Annual Contribution Limit: $5,000

The plan year is July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021. Once elections are made, they cannot be changed mid-year unless there is a qualifying event. All deductions are pre-tax and paid on a bi-weekly basis.

Flexible Spending Accounts are "Use it Or Lose It". Funds that are not expensed by the end of the plan year are forfeited, so please consider your contribution amount carefully. However, the UPG Medical FSA does allow for $550 unused funds to be rolled over into the next year’s medical FSA.

Important note regarding limits: While UPG’s Plan Year runs July – June, the annual contribution limits are tied to the tax year, per IRS regulations. Therefore, if you started a benefited position with UPG after January 1, 2020 and maximized either of these plans, maximizing again MAY lead you to exceed the calendar year IRS limits. If you reach the limit in the tax year, Workday will stop your deduction for the remainder of the year and a manual adjustment will be processed in January, 2021 to capture the missed deductions.

Our vendor for FSA is McGriff Insurance.

  • Life Insurance

During Open Enrollment, eligible staff and managers have an opportunity to purchase supplemental life insurance for themselves, their spouse or children or to increase their supplemental life insurance if they already participate.

    • You may elect an additional $10,000 or $20,000 for yourself without needing to complete Evidence of Insurability.
    • You may elect an additional $5,000 or $10,000 for your spouse without needing to complete Evidence of Insurability, provided coverage purchased for spouse does not exceed what you have purchased for yourself.
    • You may also elect coverage for your child (a flat $20,000 life policy), provided coverage purchased for spouse does not exceed what you have purchased for yourself.
    • If you wish to purchase additional coverage beyond these limits or your elections exceed the personal coverage limit of $200,000 (self) and $30,000 (spouse), you will be prompted to submit Evidence of Insurability to the carrier. When applicable, Workday will send this to you as an additional task. In that case, the increased premium rates will not go into effect until Principal has reviewed your application.
