For Michael (Mike) Duffy, UVA Facilities Management Transportation Operations and Fleet Manager, earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia was more than an academic achievement. It was the fulfillment of a goal years in the making.
In May 2026, Duffy walked the Lawn as a graduate of UVA’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS), marking the culmination of five years of balancing full-time work with coursework. Along the way, he was selected as the SCPS diploma ceremony student speaker, inducted into the prestigious Raven Society, and received scholarships from SCPS, including the Dean’s Scholarship–recognition that reflects both his academic accomplishments and leadership across the University.
The Raven Society induction, in particular, left a lasting impression. Duffy described the recognition as “humbling” and “surreal,” noting that it represents something bigger than himself and serves as inspiration for others considering their own educational goals.
A journey shaped by persistence
Duffy’s path to a degree was not linear. Over the years, he started and paused his studies multiple times while building his career. It wasn’t until a classroom collaboration with UVA students and faculty that something shifted internally.
That experience helped him realize he could succeed as a student, and with encouragement from the University’s EDGE program, he enrolled and committed to completing his degree, truly making the most of the education benefits available to him.
For five years, Duffy balanced work responsibilities with coursework, demonstrating persistence and determination. His efforts culminated this spring when he joined fellow graduates on the Lawn, marking a milestone shared with his wife, Karen, a double Hoo and provider for UPG.
Finding purpose in the work
Duffy brings the same dedication to his work that he brought to his studies. When asked what he loves most about his role, he shared:
I love working in fleet management. I often tell people that I feel like I get to go to the amusement park every day and enjoy all the rides. But what truly makes this work meaningful is the team around me. Together, we have built and delivered a high value fleet program focused on safety and sustainability that I believe serves as a genuine model of efficiency and excellence for institutions of higher learning across the country.
At UVA, Duffy oversees a large and complex fleet operation, helping lead initiatives that advance safety, sustainability, and operational excellence. He is leading efforts to transition the fleet to electric vehicles and improve efficiency. His work has contributed to national recognition, including Calstart's Sustainable Fleet Accreditation, making UVA Facilities Management the first university fleet in Virginia to receive the designation.
Collaboration that makes an impact
A defining theme of Duffy’s career and his academic journey is collaboration. Reflecting on his work with UVA faculty and students, he shared:
I have been fortunate to have the support of my leadership and the opportunity to work alongside UVA Professor Brian Park and his students for the past six years. Our collaboration has centered on fleet safety and sustainability, conducting research grounded in telematics data that has led to several published papers on fleet safety and sustainability. What started as a partnership across different areas of the University has grown into something truly special, built on the idea that when you break down silos and work together to solve real world problems, remarkable things can happen.
That collaboration has produced meaningful results, including research grounded in fleet data, award-winning safety and sustainability programs, and national recognition from organizations like the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA).
Duffy has also led or supported initiatives that extend beyond Grounds. He wrote the grant made available by Virginia Clean Cities that brought UVA’s first electric vehicle DC fast chargers to Grounds and helped see the project through to installation. This effort benefits both the University and the surrounding community.
A leader others count on
Colleagues describe Duffy as a thoughtful leader and problem solver who steps in to help others succeed. In one example, he helped secure a vehicle at no cost to support UVA Health’s Community Paramedicine program, removing a barrier and helping the program launch on time to better serve patients.
His work has been recognized by UVA leadership and national organizations for advancing sustainability and innovation. In 2023, he received the Virginia Clean Cities University Clean Transportation Leader award and helped the Facilities Management Fleet earn a spot among the 100 Best Public Fleets in North America. He was also recognized with a UVA Sustainability Leadership Award for his contributions to sustainability efforts on Grounds and in the broader community. Under his leadership, the fleet made measurable progress toward electrification, converting 13% of the fleet to electric vehicles and earning UVA a top spot in NAFA’s 2023 Green Fleet Awards among university fleets.
Inspiring others to take the next step
For Duffy, graduating from UVA is both a personal milestone and an opportunity to inspire others. His sons, Brian and Stephen, also walked the Lawn, making the milestone especially meaningful. Having his wife, Karen, a double Hoo, present for the graduation, was deeply rewarding. And in 2024, he received the NAFA Mentor of the Year Award, which recognized his collaborative efforts across fleet agencies.
His journey reflects what’s possible with persistence, support, and a willingness to keep going, even after setbacks. As a working professional who returned to the classroom and thrived, he hopes his story encourages others across the UVA community to pursue their own educational goals.
