Clinical Specialities

As a UVA nurse, you can choose a specialty that reflects your interest, expertise and skill, including positions in inpatient and outpatient, home care, surgical and procedural areas.

  • Critical Care

    UVA Critical Care Units serve patients experiencing acute and chronic illnesses from MI and trauma to cardio-thoracic surgery and organ transplantation. Nurses are involved in bedside nursing research and provide superior patient care and support for families. Bedside practice is based on nursing ideas, expertise, research and policies, with nurses working collaboratively with physicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, pharmacists and social workers to ensure positive patient outcomes.

    Critical Care Nursing at UVA has earned acclaim by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). In fact, three of our critical care units—the Medical Intensive Care Unit, the Surgical Trauma Burn Intensive Care Unit and the Thoracic Cardiovascular Post-Operative Unit—received Beacon Awards for excellence in intensive care environments, evidence-based processes and outcomes, support of healthy work environments and meeting the AACN mission, vision and values.

    Critical Care Nurses are encouraged to build their careers through education, presentation, publication and membership in professional organizations, including the Monticello Chapter of AACN.

    Our Critical Care units include:

    • Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
    • Surgical Trauma ICU (STICU)
    • Coronary Care Unit (CCU)
    • Thoracic Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (TCV ICU)
    • Nerancy Neuro Intensive Unit (NNICU)
    • Although each unit differs in patient population, they share a common nursing goal: to provide evidence-based, comprehensive care that is truly rewarding and beyond measure.
  • Dialysis

    For those interested in Nephrology Nursing, UVA offers a variety of clinical settings across central Virginia, including:

    • A progressive Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Clinic and procedure area
    • Eight outpatient dialysis facilities located in Charlottesville and surrounding counties, including Louisa, Orange, Page, Augusta, Amherst, Lynchburg and Altavista.
    • Three acute programs in three facilities—the UVA Medical Center, Central Health's Lynchburg General Hospital and Augusta Medical Center

    In addition to providing state-of-the-art technology, we offer a highly collaborative working environment that supports nurse autonomy.   • Emergency Services

    Working in a Level 1 Trauma Center with an annual patient volume of more than 61,000, UVA Emergency Services nurses care for the most challenging trauma patients in central Virginia. Commitment to education and the advancement of quality care are trademarks of our department. As an Emergency nurse, you will be provided with the resources to work at the highest levels of efficiency in a highly collaborative, respectful environment.

    Home Health nurses at UVA Health reach out to patients where it counts most—at home. We help a diverse group of patients maximize their independence and return to normal life by providing patients and families with the treatment, knowledge and resources they need. In addition, our management team works diligently to provide staff with continuing education to stay on the leading edge. Because our nurses receive the training they need, our patients benefit from comprehensive care planning. Home Health provides the ideal practice environment where the nurse can spend devoted time teaching patients and their family members how to best care for themselves and their loved ones.

    The Women's Place at UVA provides comprehensive obstetrical care to women experiencing both high-risk and normal pregnancies.     Hospital provides innovative care to infants, children and adolescents with complex health issues. We serve young patients statewide and from across the nation.

    As a nurse at our Children's Hospital, you'll develop specialized expertise through our strong orientation, continuing education and professional development programs, as well as through mentorship in bedside care. Our fast-paced environment and high patient acuity continuously stimulate growth and learning in staff across all our settings. With expansion of our services planned, UVA nurses will have an even greater role in shaping the future of pediatric healthcare.

    Nurses play a key leadership role in the coordination of care. Through a well-established, evidence-based practice system, nurses define and direct advances in care predicated upon national standards and best practices literature. With our focus on quality pediatric care, nursing excellence thrives in our tertiary Children's Hospital program.

    In all of our inpatient settings, we support the whole child, and families play an integral role in our collaborative team of experts serving our smallest patients.

    • NICU and Transitional Nursery: 45-bed NICU that cares for Level II and Level III infants
    • Acute Care Pediatrics: 35-bed acute and intermediate care beds

  • Psychiatric Services

    As a Psychiatric Nurse at UVA, you'll be an integral member of our multidisciplinary treatment team. Our Psychiatric Services are provided in two separate units.  One is a 16-bed, general acute-care unit; the second is a 20-bed, acute-care unit with a focus on the geriatric patient.

    To train newly graduated nurses interested in surgical services and experienced nurses wishing to change the focus of their practice, UVA OR utilizes the AORN's innovative "Periop 101" core curriculum program. The peer-reviewed program is written by expert perioperative nurses and is based on the AORN's Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices. Each four- to six-month program consists of computer-based modules, post-tests and classroom experience in a "Mock OR," providing training in both the circulating and scrub roles, giving UVA nurses a solid perioperative orientation.

RN New Graduate/Nurse Residency Program

The first two years of professional practice establish the foundation of clinical skills you will need for the length of your career. We are committed to your professional development and will invest in your clinical practice throughout your tenure.

Our RN New Graduate Programs provide generous, protected orientation time: three months for nurses entering acute care settings and five months for nurses beginning in critical care units. Experienced Preceptors and Nursing Education Coordinators tailor the program to meet your individual needs. In addition, regular meetings with other new graduate nurses allow you to learn and develop together.

Throughout your first year of practice, monthly classes supplement your clinical orientation. These classes provide didactic, evidence-based content essential to developing clinicians, as well as peer discussion about transition-to-practice issues.

Advanced Practice Nursing

Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) at UVA are masters prepared, nationally certified clinicians who manage the care of a defined patient population.  Practicing as a Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist, the APN is recogninized as an interdisciplinary leader within the service area and institution.  Their role includes expert direct clinical practice, consultation and research.

In addition, the APN II role includes critically analyzing the health care delivery system and clinical outcomes to maximize the delivery of quality, cost effective patient care services.  APN IIIs design, implement, and evaluate creative approaches to patient care, and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge through research and scholarly works.

The Advanced Practice Nurse also helps establish a culture of quality patient care through coaching, guidance and mentorship of others.

  • Medical Laboratories

    As an academic medical center, we perform many tests in-house that other hospitals send out to reference laboratories, such as flow cytometry, allergy testing, blood cell differentials by automated imaging and many special stains in histology to aid in diagnosis of malignancies. Equally interesting, we have several unique, testing specialized areas, including:

    • CYTOGENETICS LABORATORY: State-of-the-art techniques for chromosome analysis, including FISH testing

    • MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS LABORATORY: Part of the Microbiology Department, the molecular diagnostics lab performs a large number of PCR-based tests for infectious disease along with tests for genetic mutations such as cystic fibrosis

    • TOXICOLOGY LABORATORY: An innovative lab employing mass spectrometry and other techniques to test for immunosuppressive drugs, drugs of abuse and anabolic steroids.

    • SURGICAL PATHOLOGY LABORATORY: An exciting area aiding in the diagnosis of malignancies utilizing histochemical, immunohistochemical and enzyme histochemistry stains and immunofluroescence. The laboratory also provides ISH/FISH testing and Electron Microscopy services.
