COVID Vaccination Requirements for UVA New Hires


The University of Virginia is committed to protecting the health and safety of our UVA community members and patients. As such, UVA expects all employees, including new hires, to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

See below info for the separate vaccination requirements for UVA Health and Academic Division employees. 

UVA Health Information

All newly hired UVA Health employees, including clinicians, faculty and staff who will be working at the Medical Center, UVA Physicians Group, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Health System Library, are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 (some exceptions apply).

  • Who is required to get vaccinated

    This requirement is for all UVA Health employees including clinicians, faculty and staff working in the Medical Center, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, UVA Physicians Group and Claude Moore Health Sciences Library.

    Those previously infected with COVID-19 are not exempt from this vaccination requirement.

  • How to apply for a medical or religious exemption

    You may apply for a medical or religious exemption from vaccination. However, some medical and safety sensitive positions require vaccination and are not eligible for an exemption. If you would like to apply for a medical or religious exemption, please complete this request form

    If you will be working on Grounds at least on occasion, you will be required to conduct weekly COVID-19 prevalence testing and subject to mandatory masking requirements - even if you were granted a medical or religious exemption from vaccination. See prevalence testing information in the next FAQ. 

    How to apply for an exemption will be discussed during your orientation. 

  • Mandatory weekly prevalence testing for the non-vaccinated or not fully vaccinated

    UVA Health employees who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 because of a medical or religious exemption, or new hires who are not yet fully vaccinated, i.e. two weeks after second dose or J&J dose, are subject to mandatory saliva PCR testing at least once each week. Mandatory prevalence testing is being instituted as part of UVA’s commitment to help protect the health and safety of our UVA community members and patients.   • Where to get vaccinated

    New UVA Health employees who have received their use ID may schedule a vaccination appointment at a UVA location in VaxTrax.

    There are also several ways to find vaccine providers near you, including these methods published by the CDC.    

    Reminder: you must receive your final vaccine dose at least 14 days before your start date, and provide proof of the vaccination.

Academic Division Information

In September, President Biden issued Executive Order 14042, which requires employees of organizations that hold certain federal contracts to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Provost Magill and Vice President Davis announced on Monday, November 8, that all University employees, including remote employees, must receive their final vaccination dose by January 4, 2022, unless they have a University-approved religious or medical exemption. The University has updated policy SEC-045 to reflect these new requirements.
