UVA New Hire COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements

COVID Vaccination Requirements for UVA New Hires

The University of Virginia is committed to protecting the health and safety of our UVA community members and patients. As such, UVA expects all employees, including new hires, to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

See below info for the separate vaccination requirements for UVA Health and Academic Division employees.

UVA Health Information

All newly hired UVA Health employees, including clinicians, faculty and staff, who will be working at the Medical Center, UVA Physicians Group, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Health System Library, are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 (some exceptions apply).

See details below about vaccination requirements, and how to get vaccinated if you have not already done so.

  • Who is required to get vaccinated

This requirement is for all UVA Health employees including clinicians, faculty and staff working in the Medical Center, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, UVA Physicians Group and Claude Moore Health Sciences Library.

Those previously infected with COVID-19 are not exempt from this vaccination requirement.

  • Who is exempt from vaccination

You may apply for a medical or religious exemption from vaccination. However, some medical and safety sensitive positions require vaccination and are not eligible for an exemption. If you would like to apply for a medical or religious exemption, please complete this request form

If you will be working on Grounds at least on occasion, you will be required to conduct weekly COVID-19 prevalence testing and subject to mandatory masking requirements - even if you were granted a medical or religious exemption from vaccination. See prevalence testing information in the next FAQ.

How to apply for an exemption will be discussed during your orientation.

  • Mandatory weekly prevalence testing for the non-vaccinated

UVA Health employees who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 are subject to mandatory saliva PCR testing at least once each week. Mandatory prevalence testing is being instituted as part of UVA’s commitment to help protect the health and safety of our UVA community members and patients. Information about how testing is being conducted is located on this webpage.

  • Where to get vaccinated

New UVA Health employees who have received their use ID may schedule a vaccination appointment at a UVA location in VaxTrax.

There are also several ways to find vaccine providers near you, including these methods published by the CDC.

Reminder: you must receive your final vaccine dose at least 14 days before your start date, and provide proof of the vaccination.

Academic Division Information

All Academic Division employees, including faculty and staff, wage and temp workers, part-time and full-time, who will be working on Grounds in Charlottesville are expected to be vaccinated against COVID-19 (some exceptions apply).

For faculty and staff employed at the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Health System Library, please see the UVA Health section above.

See details below about vaccination requirements, and how to get vaccinated if you have not already done so.

  • Who is expected to get vaccinated

All Academic Division employees (including faculty and staff, wage and temporary workers, part-time and full-time) are expected to be vaccinated unless you will be working 100% remotely, meaning never working on Grounds in Charlottesville.

For those who will be working in the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and the Health System Library, please see the UVA Health requirements above.

  • Who is exempt from vaccination

If you will be working 100% remote, meaning never working on Grounds in Charlottesville, vaccination is not required but strongly encouraged.

However, if you will be working on Grounds at least on occasion, you will be required to conduct weekly COVID-19 prevalence testing and subject to mandatory masking requirements.

Academic Division employees do not need to apply for a religious or medical vaccination exemption if working on Grounds, but must submit to weekly prevalence testing.

See below for prevalence testing information.

  • Info about prevalence testing

UVA Academic Division employees who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 and who are not working 100% remote (i.e. work at least occasionally on Grounds), are subject to mandatory saliva PCR testing at least once each week. Mandatory prevalence testing is being instituted as part of UVA’s commitment to help protect the health and safety of our UVA community members and patients.
