Health System Orientation

Welcome to the University of Virginia Health System! We are glad you are here! UVA Health System includes a hospital, a Level I Trauma Center, a nationally recognized cancer center and heart center, and primary and specialty clinics throughout Central Virginia. No matter where you are working, patient-centered care is the first priority.

Staff of the Medical Center and University Physicians Group, staff and faculty of the School of Medicine, and Advanced Practice Practitioners make up the Health System. This will be the first step toward building a successful career in healthcare. Depending on your role, HSO will take may take several days to complete. When you have completed your HSO sessions, you may be asked to participate in a department-specific orientation; your department’s onboarding will take you through your first year.

Onboarding Essentials For Medical Center

HSO General Sessions

Health System Orientation (HSO) is your first step towards building a successful career. Depending on your role, HSO will take between 1 to 3 days to complete. When you have completed your HSO sessions, you will participate in a specific department based orientation.

    HSO is held every other Monday from 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. in the Education Resource Center - 1220 Lee St., Charlottesville, VA.

    A high-level overview presentation by the Benefits Team is held during a late afternoon session, from 3:30-4:30 PM in the Education Resource Center.

    There will be a fair amount of walking to many locations each day. We urge you to please bring appropriate footwear and weather gear. If you need accommodations for any reason, please contact HROD@hscmail.mcc.virginia.edu at least two weeks prior to attending HSO.

  • Cancellation Policy

    HSO follows the UVA Health System operating schedule. Non-designated employees are those employees who are asked not to report to work if there is inclement weather or for any reason the Health System may close. If an announcement has been posted on the Health System Status Board where non-designated employees are not report to work, HSO will be rescheduled. You will be contacted with a rescheduled date.

Days 2 & 3 - Orientation to Patient Care (OPC) for Medical Center Employees Only

Orientation to Patient Care (OPC) is designed for Medical Center employees with direct patient care responsibilities.

Not everyone attends OPC. You will know when you receive your schedule on HSO morning. Each component of OPC is created for special work groups. Attendance and participation in the components will depend on your new role. Once you have completed your required OPC components, you will report to your department/unit to begin department orientation. 

Nursing Clinical Orientation

With the exception of Clinician 1s and Travelers, RNs are required to attend Nursing Clinical Onboarding (NCO) for three to seven weeks after the first week of hire. Attendance dates will be distributed on Day 2 of OPC.
