Learning to Lead @UVA Health: New Manager Orientation is a high-level, multi-session blended learning program and serves as the first step in connecting new managers to the organization and to others at UVA Health. Learning to Lead @ UVA Health: New Manager Orientation is being re-designed to better meet the needs of our participants. UVA Health’s focus is patient-centered care, and because of many demands on new managers, there is not always time for training. This program will better equip new people managers at UVA Health in a way that works with their busy schedules and provides them with what they’ll need to acclimate to a management role.

The program is designed for new people managers at UVA Health including the Medical Center, University of Virginia Physicians Group (UPG), School of Medicine (SOM), and School of Nursing (SON).

  • Program

    The focus of Learning to Lead @ UVA Health: New Manager Orientation is to prepare people managers for success at UVA Health.

    The program consists of two Zoom sessions on a scheduled date and time, and four online, asynchronous learning modules which you complete on your own and at your own pace. These sessions will be assigned to you in Workday.

    Learning to Lead @ UVA Health: New Manager Orientation should be completed within 1-3 months of your start date.

    The sessions of the program include:

    • Welcome and Connect
    • Develop Resource Knowledge
    • Build Relationships
    • Lead Teams
    • Inspire Others

    The last session will be via Zoom, and you will be joined by other new managers who have also completed the program for this session. It will provide you with next steps, including your own professional development and an introduction of the next leadership program, “Tools to Lead.”

    Following “Tools to Lead,” you may choose to participate in “Dare to Lead” and “Leadership Essentials.” All programs are facilitated by the HR Learning & Development Team and are delivered in a group learning style.

  • Audience

    This program is designed for “people leaders,” those who are responsible for performance, policy, and practice at UVA Health: the Medical Center, University of Virginia Physicians Group (UPG), School of Medicine, and School of Nursing (SON).

    We welcome:

    • New people managers regardless of management experience elsewhere
    • New people managers promoted from within at UVA Health

    The program is strongly recommended for these audiences.

    New people managers will be invited by Orientation Team or assigned by their manager. Program participants will be enrolled through Workday Learning and should begin within their first month after hire or promotion. It is designed to be completed within 1-3 months of start date.
