Nursing Professional Development Services (NPDS)

Nursing Professional Development Services (NPDS) is a team dedicated to the professional development of staff within the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) patient care services division.

Our practice is based on the Nursing Professional Development: Scope and Standards of Practice published by the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD).

Life Support Learning Center

The Life Support Learning Center provides training and education in current resuscitation and critical thinking surrounding arrest and patient decompensation that is essential for optimal patient outcomes.

Courses offered by the Life Support Learning Center are targeted to those who treat children and adults in emergency situations. Programs are designed to create learning opportunities that will enhance and expand the knowledge and skills of health care providers, improve the quality of health care delivery during emergency situations, and improve patient care.

Career-Specific Training

UVA offers several career-specific training programs for nurses, including a Radiation Therapy Program and a Patient Care Assistant. Additional programs, including a Pharmacy Technician program, can be accessed through PVCC. You may also refer to the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) for information about careers in Laboratory Medicine.

  • Radiation Therapy Program (UVA)

UVA’s Radiation Oncology department blends compassionate employees with high technology to deliver patient focused individualized care. We have been leaders in new technology for years and have the widest number of advanced treatment options in the state of Virginia, allowing us to custom tailor a treatment for each patient’s unique needs.

  • Patient Care Assistant Training Program (Nurse Aide Course with CATEC)

The Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC), offers a nursing aide program which prepares participants to take the Certified Nursing Assistant exam.  Successfully passing the CNA is a prerequisite to becoming a Patient Care Assistant at UVA Medical Center.

The Nurse Aide course is great for those interested in working in the health care field. Course offers intense (excessive) study of nurse aide standards and includes a significant amount of reading and exams. Classes meet three times a week —two nights of study and one night for clinical work. Classroom and clinical instructions include topics such as nurse aide standards, state requirements, legal issues, safety, nutrition, patient care, special care, science and clinical evaluation. Requirements: students must provide a current tuberculosis test, and sign the Nurse Aide Enrollment Acknowledgment form, and criminal history form.
