Career Journeys Job Framework

To build the Career Journeys Job Framework, the team carefully reviewed positions across the University to identify shared characteristics - like area of work, scope, and responsibilities. This led to the creation of simplified job profiles that most accurately show how each existing position fits within the broader landscape of roles. While the project doesn’t affect business titles or employee pay (hourly/salary pay rate), it lays the foundation for enhanced career development services, including competency-based training and career counseling.

Every identified, in-scope job has a unique combination of four attributes that make up an employee’s job profile:

  • Learn More About Job Profile

Job Profile is essentially a complete job description that combines four key elements to create a specific position at the university:

What it is in simple terms: Think of it like a mailing address for jobs. Just as your home address has a state, city, street, and house number to pinpoint exactly where you live, a Job Profile uses these four components to pinpoint exactly what a job entails:

    • Job Family Group = The broad professional field (like "Information Technology")
    • Job Family = The specialty within that field (like "Database Administration")
    • Career Stream = The type of role (like "Professional")
    • Level = The duties/complexity (like "Level 2")

Why it's important: This system creates consistency across the entire university. Instead of having hundreds of randomly named job titles, every position fits into this organized framework. This means employees can easily understand where they fit in the organization and what skills are valued.

How it helps with career paths: The structure acts like a career roadmap. Employees can see:

    • Horizontal moves: Switch to different Job Families within the same group
    • Vertical moves: Advance to higher Levels within their current specialty
    • Diagonal moves: Combine specialty changes with level advancement

This clarity helps people plan their professional development, understand what skills they need to advance, and identify realistic next steps in their university career. It takes the guesswork out of career progression.

Job Family Groups

A Job Family Group is a broad category within the Job Framework where jobs share similar knowledge, skills, and types of work—for example, Information Technology or Finance. Most University roles are organized this way to make it easier to explore related career paths.

Keep in mind that while your department name may match a Job Family Group (e.g., Human Resources), your role could align more closely with a different group (e.g., Information Technology).

Each Job Family Group page includes details about the Job Families within it, along with definitions of key Career Journeys terms such as career stream, level, and job profile. Below is a preview of what employees see when exploring the Job Framework.

Through the Job Directory, all employees can view their Job Family Group, Career Stream, and Level—providing a clearer picture of their role and helping them explore career opportunities at UVA.
