Safety

  • Develop an Emergency Plan and maintain an Emergency Kit (“Go-Kit”).
  • Avoid travel if possible.
  • If you are traveling, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
  • Remember that roads, parking areas, and walkways can never be completely cleared of slick spots. Watch out for slips, trips, and falls when walking or entering and exiting your vehicle. Walk slowly, checking for icy spots. The safest path in bad weather may not be your routine path, so allow extra time for driving and walking. Snow crews focus on the two central walks from South Garage into the buildings so staff can get under cover in the shortest distance.
  • Don’t forget your winter weather attire: boots, gloves, and a hat. Dressing in layers will also help retain heat.
  • Plan ahead and add extra time for safe travel. View road conditions from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Virginia 511 site and mobile app.
  • Power
    • This winter storm could result in power outages – here are some safety tips if your power goes out.
    • Do not use generators indoors or in your garage.
    • Do not leave open flames or heaters unattended, including candles.
    • Use all indoor heating and cooking devices according to manufacturer instructions – Do not use outdoor grills inside your home.
    • Sanitation: How to flush a toilet without running water
    • Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms with battery backup.
    • Keep food cold and when in doubt, throw it out.
