Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
If you're employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, you might qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program. This federal initiative forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under an accepted repayment plan while working full-time for an eligible employer.
If you’re employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, you might be eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program. The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you’ve made the equivalent of 120 qualifying monthly payments under an accepted repayment plan, and while working full-time for an eligible employer.
To check if your employer qualifies and to access assistance with PSLF forms, such as the employment certification form, you can utilize the PSLF Help Tool To search for UVA under qualifying employers, use UVA's Federal Employer Identification Number 54-6001796.
Remember, UVA HR is available to aid in completing these forms (such as employee certification), and submissions requiring employer input can be sent to AskHR@virginia.edu. However, this is a federal program and isn't administered by UVA HR or any part of the University.
Additionally, committing to PSLF or another forgiveness program entails making 120 monthly on-time payments. While switching to an income-driven repayment plan (required for PSLF eligibility) may initially increase your student debt, forgiveness at the program's conclusion can offset this. If you won't be working full-time for 120 months in a nonprofit, forgiveness might not be the best option. It's advisable to seek advice from a personal tax or legal advisor before deciding on your student loan status.
