Your medical, dental, and/or vision benefits can begin on the first date of employment (or choose to wait until the first of the month if you have coverage elsewhere).
- Date of employment: If you need coverage immediately, you have the option to start your medical, dental, and/or vision benefits as of your date of employment. This may be a good option if you are currently not covered elsewhere, or you desire coverage as soon as possible.
- First of the month following your date of employment: You can choose to start your medical, dental, and/or vision benefits on the first of the month after you are hired. This may be a good option if you have coverage from a previous employer or are under a family member’s coverage that is still active through the end of the month.
- No medical, dental, and/or vision coverage: You can officially waive your medical, dental, and/or vision benefit options as well as enroll or waive in other benefits during your new hire change benefit event.
Please review the Coordination of Benefits document regarding your coverage and how it works with your prior employer.

Tax Information
UVA J Visa Health Plan members should download their 1095-B tax forms from the Aetna international secure portal. This form reports the type of health insurance coverage you have, any dependents covered by your health insurance policy, and the period of coverage for 2022. It is used to verify on your tax return that you and your dependents had at least minimum qualifying health insurance coverage. Instructions on how to download this form.
Overview
The J Visa Health Plan (previously called the J1 Visa Health Plan) is a self-insured plan designed just for J1 visa holders that meets the minimum requirements set by the U.S. Department of State, including medical evacuation and repatriation. These requirements can change with minimal notice, and offering a plan specifically for J Visa holders allows UVA to alter the plan benefits quickly, if necessary.
Key Takeaways
- For the 2024 plan year, premiums will increase for the UVA J Visa Health Plan for UVA employees on J visas. As a self-insured health plan, the Plan is paid for by employee and employer contributions, and rising prices have an impact on the cost of the health plan. UVA has absorbed these costs for the last three years and held premiums flat for employees. While employee premium rates will increase in 2024, the employer contribution will cover the greatest part of the increases.
- There are no changes to UVA J Visa Health Plan deductibles or coverage levels for 2024.
Who is Eligible?
Only UVA employees on J visas will be eligible for enrollment on this health plan. If your visa status changes to a J visa during the plan year, you will need to change your health coverage accordingly.
If your visa status changes from a J visa to an H1B visa during the plan year, you will remain on the J Visa Health Plan for the plan year. You will be able to change your health coverage during Open Enrollment for the next plan year.
J visa holders are still eligible for UVA's standard dental and vision coverage.
