Thank you so much for your feedback in our January, 2024 focus groups - with your guidance and insight we are excited to share with you our new Learning Tracks.

Our Learning Track are flexible and designed to meet you where you are in your leadership journey. Choose the pathway that aligns best with your goals—whether you're new to management or preparing to take on a leadership role soon. To help you decide, we’ve created a self-assessment tool to guide you to the pathway that fits your unique experience and aspirations.

These tracks provide a structured, practical approach to leadership development, supporting career growth and fostering a collaborative, empowering environment where every team member feels valued and prepared to excel. Whether you’re beginning your management journey or advancing in your current role, the Learning Tracks are designed to help you build essential skills, aligned with UVA’s mission of nurturing leaders who create meaningful, lasting impact.

  • Aspiring Manager – For those who are looking to grow into a supervisory capacity. This track does not guarantee promotion.  
  • New Manager – For recently promoted managers, designed to support them in their new role. 
  • Experienced Leader – For individuals that have years of management experience already.  
  • Personal Growth – Designed for individual contributors looking to expand their knowledge, abilities, and skills, without a specific management goal in mind.   

Each Learning Track at UVA provides a flexible, personalized experience, allowing you to choose classes that align with your unique growth areas. Tracks include a combination of courses, programs, microlearning, and quarterly Leadership Exchanges where participants engage in case study discussions and share insights. With approximately 40 hours of learning, each track offers a comprehensive journey to build impactful leadership skills.

Aspiring Manager Track

For those looking to take on leadership roles in the near future, the Aspiring Manager Pathway offers foundational skills to help you lead confidently and strategically. You’ll focus on areas like navigating change, strategic decision-making, and managing peer relationships, building the toolkit you need to step into leadership with purpose. This path features 11 core classes and 2 programs that may be the right fit for you.

    • Advocating for Your Career (1 hour)​ - Learn how to claim your achievements and translate them to your resume.
    • Building Accountability (2 hours) - Create a culture of accountability for your team.
    • Decision-Making: How to Make Better Choices (2.5 hours)​
      • Learn about the 4 villains that undermined our decisions.
    • Developing Others (2 hours)​​ - Learn how to grow and develop those around you.
    • Demystifying Executive Presence (3 hours)​ - Learn how credibility, communication, confidence, and charisma play into executive presence.
    • Giving and Receiving Feedback (2 hours)​​ - Learn how to give and receive positive and constructive feedback.
    • Introduction to Emotional Intelligence (2.5 hours)​​ - Understand and manage your emotions.
    • Making the Leap from Peer to Manager (2 hours)​​ - Learn how to navigate your new relationships as well as some practical starting points.

New Manager Track

This track is tailored for managers leading teams. You’ll learn how to set clear operational norms, have tough yet productive conversations, and coach your team to meet and exceed their goals. This path features 7 core classes and 3 programs that may be the right fit for you.

    • Building Accountability (2 hours)​​ - Create a culture of accountability for your team.​
    • Crucial Influence (8 hours)​​ - Learn and apply the six sources of influence.
    • Emotional Intelligence in Action (2 hours)​ ​ -Understand and manage your emotions for effective leadership.​
    • Giving and Receiving Feedback (2 hours)​​ -Learn how to give and receive feedback.
    • Landing the Leap from Peer to Manager (2 hours)​​ - Transition smoothly into your new role with practical strategies.​
    • Managing Conflict (2 hours)​​ - Identify five common approaches to conflict and understand the implications of each style.
    • Leading for Impact: Creating Inclusive and Engaged Teams (8 hours)​​ - Develop skills to lead diverse teams and foster inclusion.​
  • Programs (Choose 2):

    • Leadership Foundations (16 hours)​ - REQUIRED - Leadership foundations for UVA specific tools. Launching in 2025.
    • Crucial Conversations for Mastering Dialogue (12.5 hours)​​ - Master the art of effective communication in high-stakes situations.​
    • Situational Leadership (16 hours)​​ - A common language for developing people with directive and support behaviors. ​

    Case Studies and Real-Life Applications

Please note in 2025 we will be adding two additional tracks including an Experienced Leader Track and a Personal Growth Track.

Here’s how to get started:

  • Step 1: Sign up for a Welcome Session (Optional)

    Kickstart your track with our 1-hour Welcome session! Held monthly on zoom, these sessions provide an opportunity to meet a consultant, ask questions, and get started on your journey. Register via Workday.

  • Step 2: Review the Expectations

    What We Expect From You:

    • Commitment to Learning: We estimate a Learning Track will take approximately 12-18 months to complete and require approximately 30-40 hours of coursework. This includes attending workshops and courses, participating in quarterly exchanges, and engaging in optional microlearning sessions. Completion of the Learning Track isn’t required within a certain timeframe.
    • Open Mindset: Approach each course and activity with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Embrace new perspectives, challenge your assumptions, and be open to constructive feedback. Your engagement enriches the experience for everyone.
    • Utilization of Available Resources: Take advantage of the Strengths/ Career Navigation coaching sessions, Korn Ferry Card sort, and other resources that are available to you, including your peers during Learning Exchanges. Don’t hesitate to reach out for guidance or clarification when needed.
    • Personal Accountability: Regularly reflect on your learning experiences and consider how they apply to your role. Use the tools and strategies provided to actively apply what you’ve learned in your daily work. You are responsible for your growth. Stay committed to your learning journey, even when the path becomes challenging.

     

    What You Can Expect From Us:

    • Expert Instruction and Support: Learn from experienced leaders and facilitators who understand the unique challenges of teams and managers and can offer guidance, resources, and encouragement.
    • A Flexible Learning Experience: While the Learning Track is structured, we understand that flexibility is key. You can adjust your pace and courses within the 12-18 month timeframe and participate in courses that fit your goals.
    • A Community at UVA: Engage and network with peers who are also on their leadership journey. Share experiences, challenges, and successes in a supportive environment. Even after completing the Track, you’ll have access to resources and opportunities to continue your professional development.
  • Step 3: Commit to Your Track

    Committing to your track is the first step in your leadership development journey. By signing up, you are officially setting your intention to grow and making a commitment to the process. This step also ensures that we have the necessary information to send you invitations to your learning exchanges and provide the next steps tailored to your chosen track.

    Think of it as making a promise to yourself to stay curious, open, and intentional about developing the skills, mindset, and habits that will help you succeed as a leader. Taking this step ensures you’re actively working toward becoming the best version of yourself and receiving the full benefits of the program.

  • Step 4: Submit Your Bio & Networking Form

    Share your background and interests with your cohort. Once we receive your commitment form, we will send you a form to complete and we’ll share the compiled bios with the group on a rolling basis!

  • Step 5: Share Goals with Your Manager

    Align on your development objectives and invite their support. Additional resources will be provided during the welcome session!

  • Step 6: Strengths Assessment and Coaching (Optional)

    Our dedicated CliftonStrengths services offer individuals and teams personalized coaching to identify and leverage their unique strengths. By focusing on strengths, we help enhance personal effectiveness, team dynamics, and overall workplace engagement.

    Please note that this service is associated with a cost. We recommend confirming approval with your department before signing up to leverage this resource.

    The Korn Ferry Card Sort is a tool used to help identify key leadership competencies that align with your goals. It helps guide you in selecting the most relevant courses for your personal and professional development.

    Choose courses that align with your development goals using the Learning & Development Catalogue and your Tracks Packet as guides. Once you've mapped out your track, enroll in your selected classes, reserve time for your learning exchanges, and begin your journey!

  • What is a Learning Track?

    A Learning Track is a curated roadmap for professional development based on where an employee is in their career journey. Tracks include courses, programs, microlearnings, and experiential learning opportunities designed to help employees develop skills, connect with others facing similar challenges, and promote community and well-being. 

  • What is the time commitment for completing a Track?

    Each Track consists of 30-40 hours of coursework based on your desired area of growth. The estimated timeframe for completion of a Track is 12-18 months, but it is flexible for each participant based on their schedule and goals. 

  • How do I choose the right Track for me?

    There is a 15-question assessment that you can take to be matched with the best Track for you. Ultimately, you decide what Track is right for your goals.  

  • WWhat is the difference between the New Manager and Aspiring Manager Tracks?

    The New Manager Track is designed for individuals currently managing people, focusing on skills like decision-making and team leadership. The Aspiring Manager Track is for employees who are not yet in management roles but want to develop leadership skills for future opportunities. 

  • Can I enroll in a Track if I’ve already taken some of the classes?

    Yes, if you have previously completed some courses, we will work with you to select alternative classes or experiences to ensure you still benefit from the Track. As we are constantly refining and updating our course offerings, we will honor courses and programs completed during calendar year 2024 as part of your Track. Please contact the Learning and Development team for guidance. 

  • What happens if a class I want to take is full?

    If a course is full, you will have the option to either join the waitlist, wait for the next available session, or select an alternative course from the list. We will also offer rolling enrollment for certain classes to accommodate demand. If you are struggling to get into a class, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know. 

  • What support is available during the Track?

    Throughout the Track, you’ll have access to Learning Exchanges with peers and experts to discuss common challenges. You can also consult with the Learning & Development team for additional support, as well as reach out to your HR Business Partner. Finally, your manager plays a key role in your success—share our [Manager Support Guide] with them to align on goals. 

  • Do I need my supervisor’s approval to participate in a Track?

    While not mandatory, we strongly encourage you to discuss your participation with your supervisor to ensure it aligns with your performance development plan and workload. We have recommended conversation tools in the Welcome Packet to facilitate this discussion.  

  • How do I track my progress and complete the Track?

    You can track your progress through a checklist and regular check-ins with the program team. You can also refer to your Learning Transcript in Workday. Upon completion, you will submit an attestation confirming you have completed the track and will then receive a certificate and recognition. 

  • What happens after I complete a Track?

    Upon completion, you will receive a certificate, digital badge, and be invited to a celebratory event. You’ll also be equipped with new skills that align with your career growth and leadership development goals. We recommend as a next step you schedule a 1:1 with Career Navigation to make sure your new skills are marketed on your resume! 

  • What is the Korn Ferry Card Sort, and how does it help me?

    The Korn Ferry Card Sort is a tool used to help identify key leadership competencies that align with your goals. It helps guide you in selecting the most relevant courses for your personal and professional development. 

  • Can I take a break from the Track if I need to?

    Yes, the Track is designed to be flexible. If you need to pause your progress due to workload or personal commitments, you can pick up where you left off. 

  • How are the Learning Exchange sessions organized, and when do they take place?

    Learning Exchange sessions are held virtually throughout the year. These sessions are designed to help you connect with peers, mentors, and leadership experts. Dates and times as well as calendar invitations will be provided in advance to anyone enrolled in a Track, and attendance is encouraged but not mandatory. 

    Each session is structured to be an hour and a half long and includes:  

    • Welcome & Introduction  
    • Case Study Presentation  
    • Small Group Discussions  
    • Group Debrief & Insights Sharing  
    • Q&A and Open Forum  
    • Closing Remarks & Next Steps  
  • What happens if I don’t complete the Track within the 12-18 month timeframe?

    If you are unable to complete the Track within the designated timeframe, contact the Learning & Development team to discuss extending your timeline. We understand that unexpected events can impact your ability to complete the Track. 

  • How can I customize my Track experience?

    While each Track has a set of required courses, there are several electives and microlearning options that allow you to tailor the experience based on your career goals and interests. You can select these courses in consultation with your supervisor or a program advisor. 

  • How do I enroll?

    You enroll by signing up on our commitment card. This form is designed to help us better understand your current role, experience, and your commitment to the program. Please take a few moments to complete the sections below. Your responses will enable us to tailor the experience to your needs and ensure you have the support required for a successful journey. 

    Once you’ve submitted this form, you will receive calendar invites for your chosen pathway, along with a bio form to help us get to know you better. We’re excited to partner with you on this path to growth and leadership excellence. 

  • Is there a deadline to join?

    Enrollment is open year-round, and you can join a Track at any time. We offer rolling enrollment, so there’s no strict deadline. However, we recommend enrolling early to secure your spot in courses and stay on track for completion. 

  • Are there any costs associated with participating in the Tracks?

    No, participation in the Tracks is free for all employees. All classes, resources, and Learning Exchange sessions are provided as part of the university’s professional development offerings. There may be a cost associated with some of the recommended additional resources but these may also be found for free at the UVA Library.  

  • What should I do if I have questions or need additional support during the Track?

    If you have any questions or need help, you can contact the Learning & Development team. We also encourage you to speak with your HRBP or supervisor for additional support. 

  • Can I transfer my Track progress to a different department or job role?

    Yes, if you move to a different department or role within the organization, your Track progress will transfer with you, as long as it’s relevant to your new position. You may also have the option to adjust your Track to better align with your new responsibilities. 

  • How do the Tracks align with the university’s performance review process?

    The skills and competencies developed in the Tracks are designed to align with the university’s performance review process. We encourage participants to work with their supervisors to link their learning to their performance goals and career development plans. 

  • When is the deadline for receiving my certificate and recognition?

    Anyone who completes all coursework for a Track by November 1 will be honored at that year’s Celebration of Learning and Career Growth Event. For example, if you complete all coursework by Nov. 1, 2025, you will be honored at the 2025 Celebration event.  

  • Can I change the course I selected for the track if my goals or challenges change?

    Yes, you can update the courses or programs you've selected for the track at any time through Workday. If you need assistance making changes, feel free to contact the Learning & Development team for support.
