Selective Service

Since January 1, 1960, federal law has required most male U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents between the ages of 18 and 25 and living in the United States to register with the U.S. Selective Service. Males who are not registered by age 26 are ineligible for student financial aid, U.S. Citizenship, federal job training, and federal jobs. They are also subject to prosecution. The Code of Virginia 2.2-2804 requires selective service compliance as a condition of employment for agencies of the Commonwealth.

Males

Male applicants who have been recommended for hire cannot begin employment with the University of Virginia until they have satisfied the conditions of federal and state law. All newly-hired individuals, assigned male at birth, must complete the Selective Service attestation in Workday.

Males age 26 and older who do not attest to meeting the U.S. Selective Service requirements, can not be considered for University of Virginia positions unless:

The requirement for the person to register has terminated or become inapplicable to the person and
The person shows by a preponderance of the evidence that the failure of the person to register was not a knowing and willful failure to register.

Non-citizens

Some non-citizens are required to register and others are not. Non-citizens who are not required to register with Selective Service include the following:

Men who are in the U.S. on student or visitor visas
Men who are part of a diplomatic or trade mission
Family members of the individuals above

Almost all other male non-citizens are required to register, including illegal aliens, legal permanent residents, and refugees. The general rule is that if a male non-citizen takes up residency in the U.S. before his 26th birthday, he must register with Selective Service.

Under Age 18

All male employees who begin work under the age of 18 are not required to register with Selective Service. However, they will have 30 days to register with Selective Service once they reach their 18th birthdays.

Dual Nationals

Dual nationals of the U.S. and another country are required to register, regardless of where they live, because they are U.S. nationals.
