Care for when you need it

Caregiving Resources Provided by UVA and UPG

UVA’s caregiving resources are intended to support our faculty, staff, and team members wherever they are on their caregiving journey and align with the University 2030 Strategic Plan to strengthen our foundation.

Through UVA, you have access to resources for full-time childcare, short-term back-up care, in-home care, and/or facility-based care for dependents of all ages. UPG employees have access to these resources, as well as Family Concierge services through Bright Horizons and the option of using subsidized days for professional tutoring and pet care services through Bright Horizon’s Back-up Care.

  • On-Going Care: UVA Affiliated Center-Based Childcare

There are four local UVA-affiliated childcare centers managed by Bright Horizons and Kindercare for children aged infant through Pre-K. Contact the centers below for availability, cost, and information on how to register:

  • Back-Up Care: Center-Based and In-Home

Back-up Care is temporary care in times of need for all benefited employees. Care is provided either at Bright Horizons affiliated facilities, or in-home by professional care providers sourced for you based on specific needs. All of the trained and qualified care providers have been screened through criminal background and reference checks, and licensure and insurance documentation verified. Providers are also required to have CPR and first aid training.

    Bright Horizons Offers:

    • 24/7 care, including weekends and overnight
    • Care for employees’ dependents (dependents do not need to reside in the employee’s home).
    • Licensed, bonded, and insured agencies

Please note: It is strongly encouraged to register your dependent(s) before needing care. UVA recommends signing up for Bright Horizons Back-Up Care as soon as possible if you anticipate needing care for a child or elderly dependent.

    Qualifying Dependent Age:

Any age - infant through the elderly

    Employee Benefit:

UVA subsidizes up to 15 days per calendar year per employee

How Bright Horizons Sources Your Care:

Bright Horizons will source care depending on your needs:

    • 1st priority:
      • is center-based care – Bright Horizons will work to source space at an affiliated center
    • 2nd priority:
      • is in-home care – Bright Horizons will work to source an in-home provider if they cannot source center-based care
    • 3rd priority:
      • is out-of-network care (self-sourced) – If demand exceeds supply for center-based and/or in-home back-up care, then employees may be reimbursed up to $100 per day for any care they source on their own
        • Accept Out-of-Network Care through Bright Horizons at the pre-approved reimbursement amount (only provided when Bright Horizons cannot source appropriate care)
        • Source your own care directly, or use Sittercity to support your needs
        • Submit for reimbursement through the Bright Horizons site once care is complete

You will receive periodic updates throughout the scheduling process in your Bright Horizons portal, and the Bright Horizons specialist will schedule the specific care that you need.

After you accept care, you will post payment.

  • In-Home Care (self-pay)
