COBRA Continuation Coverage
Under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), you and your eligible covered dependents may be able to continue your UVA health coverage after it would otherwise end because of a qualifying life event. In most cases, coverage may continue for up to 18 months.
Qualified Life Events Include
- Termination of employment (unless the termination was for gross misconduct) or a reduction in work hours
- Maximum coverage: Up to 18 months
- Termination of employment or reduction in work hours while disabled, as determined by the Social Security Administration
- Maximum coverage: Up to 29 months for you, your spouse, and your eligible dependent children
- Becoming entitled to Medicare
- May qualify your covered spouse and eligible dependent children for COBRA coverage up to 18 months under certain circumstances
- Death of the covered employee
- Maximum coverage: Up to 36 months for your covered spouse and eligible dependent children
- Divorce or legal separation
- Maximum coverage: Up to 36 months for your covered spouse and eligible dependent children
- A dependent child losing eligibility under the plan
- Maximum coverage: Up to 36 months for that dependent child
Important: If more than one qualifying life event occurs, COBRA coverage is generally measured from the date of the first qualifying life event.
UnifyHR manages the Open Enrollment process for all COBRA participants.
If you are enrolled in COBRA, UnifyHR administers your Open Enrollment.
During Open Enrollment, use the UnifyHR portal to:
- Review your benefit options and premium rates.
- Update your dependent information, if needed.
- Make your Open Enrollment elections.
If you experience a divorce or your child loses dependent eligibility, notify UVA HR within 60 days of the qualifying event to preserve your COBRA election rights.
To keep your COBRA coverage, you must make your monthly premium payments to UnifyHR. Coverage may end if payments are not made in full and on time.
