Learn about VRS Basic and Optional Group Life Insurance.
Life insurance helps protect the people who depend on you financially. In exchange for your premium payments, the insurance company pays a lump-sum benefit (called a death benefit) to your designated beneficiaries if you die. Your beneficiaries can use this money to replace lost income, pay funeral expenses, pay off debts, or help cover other financial needs.
If you are a Virginia Retirement System (VRS) member, you are automatically enrolled in the VRS Basic Group Life Insurance Program, administered by Securian, at no additional cost.
Features include the following:
VRS members may purchase additional life insurance for themselves, their spouse, and eligible dependents directly through the VRS life insurance vendor. Enrollment and changes are completed outside of Workday.
Coverage is available in four options based on your selected level. If your enrollment form is received within 31 days of your date of hire, evidence of insurability (EOI) is generally not required for up to $400,000 of employee coverage and spouse coverage up to half your creditable compensation.
Forms for Enrollment, Changes, EOI, and Beneficiary requestsIf you were covered under the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) Group Life Insurance Program as a member, some benefits continue into retirement. Visit the VRS website and click on the "Just for Retirees" tab for details.
