Learn about VRS Basic and Optional Group Life Insurance.

Understanding your options with VRS

Life insurance helps protect the people who depend on you financially. In exchange for your premium payments, the insurance company pays a lump-sum benefit (called a death benefit) to your designated beneficiaries if you die. Your beneficiaries can use this money to replace lost income, pay funeral expenses, pay off debts, or help cover other financial needs.

  • Basic Group Life Insurance

If you are a Virginia Retirement System (VRS) member, you are automatically enrolled in the VRS Basic Group Life Insurance Program, administered by Securian, at no additional cost.

    Features include the following:

    • Natural death benefit is equal to your salary, rounded to the next highest thousand and then doubled
    • Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance provides financial protection if you die or suffer certain serious injuries because of a covered accident.
      • Benefits may be paid for accidental death or for a qualifying loss, such as loss of a limb, sight, hearing or other covered conditions as defined by the policy.

  • Optional Group Life Insurance

VRS members may purchase additional life insurance for themselves, their spouse, and eligible dependents directly through the VRS life insurance vendor. Enrollment and changes are completed outside of Workday.

Coverage is available in four options based on your selected level. If your enrollment form is received within 31 days of your date of hire, evidence of insurability (EOI) is generally not required for up to $400,000 of employee coverage and spouse coverage up to half your creditable compensation.
